Teams competing in the Upstate Adventure Race will be issued tear-resistant, waterproof course maps provided by Checkpoint Zero's official mapping partner,
MyTopo.com.
We used MyTopo's exceptional maps for both the 2007 and 2008 editions of the Checkpoint Zero Adventure Race and our racers loved them. The high resolution, bright colors and sharp contrast make it easy to see the exceptional detail provided by the US Geological Survey 7.5' quadrangle data on which all MyTopo maps are based.
Because MyTopo's maps are "custom centered", we're able to fit the entire course on a single map. Seeing the entire course laid out in front of you makes plotting points and choosing routes before the race more straightforward and juggling maps less of a hassle while navigating during the race (given some crafty scissor work and
creative folding ahead of time).
The benefits MyTopo maps provide the racers on the ground is clear, but what about fans watching the race from home on our
SPOT-based
GPS tracking map at CheckpointTracker.com?

Wouldn't it be great if the custom Google Maps application we built to display Checkpoints, Transition Areas and the near real-time position of each team, were able to display the exact same map the teams are carrying?
Yes it would...and it does!
Thanks to a recent upgrade to their online mapping tools, we're now able to integrate the very same data MyTopo uses to print our official race maps right into our online GPS Tracking map.
In addition to the standard Map, Satellite, Hybird, Terrain and Google Earth buttons you're used to seeing at the top right corner of most Google Maps, we've added a MyTopo button. Click it and presto...you're looking at the exact same map the racers are carrying.
We're thrilled to have the support of MyTopo so that we can continue to provide our racers the best quality maps on the market today and we're very excited to be working with them as we continue to refine the affordable, innovative race tracking features of Checkpoint Tracker.
We'll have extra course maps for sale at Check In on Friday (with free copies of the passport instructions including UTM coordinates) for fans that want to join in the fun and racers that want a fresh map for posterity.
