Swing Through the Battleground States

Last Friday, after dutifully completing and returning my absentee ballot, I left my new home state of New Hampshire and hit the road for Georgia. With 6 bikes on board, I was heading for Blue Ridge, Georgia, host of the 2008 USARA National Adventure Racing Championships. My drive overlapped the final days leading up to the November 4th presidential election, exposing me to may different faces to the election coverage as I traveled through Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and so on. Eleven states in total, until I arrived in Georgia, the final battle ground state- for both the candidates and for us. Neither candidate ran their tough fight alone. Each campaign was run by a team of thousands of individuals, from those at the top down to every volunteer that knocked on doors and manned the phones in those final days. Itâ??s an amazing under taking and the team work involved is daunting when compared to the teamwork that goes into an adventure race team. Yet many of the same principle apply, even if on a micro scale. I have often said that a good team is comprised of individuals who fully recognize that the team is bigger than any one of them, yet nothing without them.
It is on that note that I thank my team for their dedication to our efforts and helping us to rise from a little train that four years ago said, "I think I can." Every race is different, but we work well together, we do our home work, manage our mistakes well, and have identified what works for us. And like the candidates, our team goes far beyond the racers. We would be remiss if we did not credit all the people who have come to support us along the way. Thank you to our families for supporting our long and often neurotic training schedules. Thank you to our support crews who selflessly give up their weekends to freeze or fry in the elements while we run around in the woods destroying expensive gear. Thank you to our bike techs who take the extra time to get it right. Thank you to the race directors for putting a tremendous amount of their lives into the exciting races they produce. Thank you to the volunteers without whom this sport would not happen. Thank you to the camaraderie of our fellow competitors who continue to make this sport rewarding and challenging. Thank you to our sponsors: to Teva for creating the perfect shoe for this sport and supporting us these last several years. Thank you to Thule, NUUN, Crank Brothers, Rocky Mountain Bikes, Gregory packs. Most of all, thank you to Eastern Mountain Sports and their amazing team that goes above and beyond to support us in making this all possible. Back in 2004, CEO Will Manzer recognized that this sport encompassed everything that makes outdoor adventure great and personally got behind supporting the team. Thank you to him for his vision and continued support for both us and this sport. In an age when the big name television coverage and sponsorship is largely gone from adventure racing, Eastern Mountain Sports has wisely recognized that the heart and strength of this sport has always been in grassroots racing. The sport, not just our team, is stronger because of them.
As I look around and thank all the individual who are components of this team, it is impossible not to recognize a loss the adventure racing community suffered this part year. Dave Boyd encompassed in spirit and body everything that makes this sport so great. An incredibly strong racer, team leader, navigator and competitor, he led Team MOAT to amazing accomplishments over the past several years, including two USARA National Championship titles. A fierce competitor on the course, he was a generous and humble individual who would never falter to go out of his way to help another. I know he is dearly missed by his Team, his family and the sport feels the loss of his presence. He is missed at this yearâ??s USARA Championship, but he is there in the hearts and minds of both those who knew him and those who admired him from afar. We should all be so lucky to be admired and respected and loved by so many.
Adventure racing is a unique sport. In what other event do you spend as much time with your teammates, through ups and down, grueling exertion and pain, and celebrating each little victory? Regardless of how each team does at the USARA National Championships, including our own, we will all come to the finish line better individuals for the experience with our team. The race is about to start and I hope you will follow along.
