DART-nuun teaches Intro to Compass Navigation

Wednesday July 25th, 2007 - DART-nuun adventure racing team members Matt Hart, Ryan VanGorder and Aaron Rinn taught 'Intro to Compass Navigation' at the REI in Seattle as part of the Seattle Flagship Clinics and Events calendar. The class covered Map and Compass basics, setting and taking bearings, triangulation, declination and route finding strategies.

"This is not only a great way to empower individuals to make good decisions in the wilderness but to also a good way to get people interested in being outside more often and enjoy nature," explained VanGorder who has taught the class for over three years now.

Class sizes range from 10 to 40 individuals and are usually made up of hikers, climbers and outdoor enthusiast looking to increase their awareness of the outdoors and not get lost on weekend excursions. As part of the teams effort to get their sponsor's messages and products into the community the Seattle based adventure racing team can be found teaching navigation clinics up to four times a year from Alderwood to Portland and in venues such as REI and Seattle based Second Ascent.

Miles of single track greet racers at the Big Blue Oakridge 24 hour Adventure Race

DART-nuun takes 2nd

Oakridge, OR, welcomed racers from around the west coast for Big Blueâ??s first 24 hour race of 2007. Nestled in the heart of the Cascades in central Oregon, Oakridge is home to the headwaters of the Willamette River and miles of single track mountain bike trails. The race started at the top of the Cascades taking full advantage of some of the best mountain biking Oregon has to offer. After a short 10k run to separate the teams, competitors were treated to 35 miles of uninterrupted single track along the Willamette River. â??This was some of the best riding I have ever seen in an adventure race,â?? commented Glenn, team captain. Marri Chandler and Rick Bariff agreed adding that the 3500 foot drop in elevation made the bike section fast and exhilarating.

After completing the bike, the team was treated to a cool paddle on Hills Creek Lake. â??We had a great paddle in our NW Kayak Seascape 3,â?? added Rick, â??I only wish we could have paddled even longerâ??. While the paddle was 13 miles, it took its toll on racers. â??After such a long technical ride, our shoulders were very sore,â?? reflected Mari.

As night fell, the team worked its way back up into the mountains on foot. This trekking section began with a 3000 foot climb up through a beautiful river drainage and was followed with a final bushwack to a transition area. Here the team took a needed break as one of the teammates was having stomach problems. While Glenn worked on additional maps that were provided, the rest of the team prepared for the final bike to the finish.

The final bike section included forest service roads, trail and county roads to the finish back in Greenwaters Park in the center of Oakridge. Although the team clawed its way back up to the front of the race, it was too little too late to catch the strong Nike Beaver Creek team.

Next, DARTâ??nuun will compete in the Kit Carson Big Blue Adventure Race on August 11th.

The team's successes would not be possible without the generous support of their sponsors that they hand picked because they work in the world's most demanding conditions.

Mountainous Snoqualmie Pass provide a stunning backdrop to the final Trioba of 2007

DART-nuun takes 2nd at this fast pace race

Team DART-nuun comprised of Ryan VanGorder, Aaron Rinn, and Matt Hart competed in the final Trioba of 2007 and the NW Adventures produced series. Just short of 30 teams toed the line for the final Trioba and competed in a six to twelve hour race that would be hard fought. Justin and Joel Yeager brought racers back to the pass that has hosted many of their races and amazed everyone with their ability to produce another stellar race. The race consisted of 24 miles of mountain biking and over 11 miles of trekking in rugged on and off trail travel. Don't be fooled by the mileage as there were two hike a bike sections used to connect trails and roads and the bush whacking in the trek proved to be gratuitous.

Starting on the bikes the teams were required to immediately climb 2,000 feet in route to checkpoint one. "The big climb spread the field out and we knew we had to build a cushion with such a short race," explained Matt Hart when asked about the team's strategy on the biking section.

Rinn commented on carrying his bike, "The bike whack started off easy but as we approached the ridge the saplings and trees got tight and made for some creative travel." The first hike a bike had teams climbing nearly 500 feet and over half a kilometer through thick brush. DART-nuun was able to put a lead of 15 minutes on its nearest competitor, Mergeo.com, in the first 10 checkpoints of biking and they headed on to the trekking where navigation would play a key role in the race.

"Checkpoints 11 through 14 went smooth, after that we added a little unnecessary bushwhacking and got into a tailspin at checkpoint 16 where we lost nearly 40 minutes looking for the check point," explained VanGorder, "After finding CP [Checkpoint] 16 we were able make up some of the time we lost to Mergeo, but in the end it wasn't enough"

After racing for 6:42:12 DART-nuun crossed the finish line in second place with many lessons learned and another great race. Look for DART-nuun to compete next weekend at the Big Blue 24 hour race in Oakridge, Oregon, and in Australia for the 2007 XPD expedition race in August.

The team's successes would not be possible without the generous support of their sponsors that they hand picked because they work in the world's most demanding conditions.

DART-nuun member wins Momar

Last weekend, DART-nuun athlete Jen Segger-Gigg returned to her old stomping grounds on Vancouver Island to to race at the Mind over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR) adventure race in Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island, BC. Having designed the Squamish MOMAR course several months ago, it was nice for Jen to be able to race this one as opposed to being the organizer.

Jen teamed up with old race partner Adrian LaSalle-Lowe and raced as a co-ed double. This dynamic duo hadnâ??t raced together in 2 years since winning Raid the North, Nelson BC. The MOMAR race was just over 40km in total distance and featured a number of really fun mystery challenges including a slippery run up the Koksilah river bed and a blow-up inflatable device water section at the Quarry.

The team finished 1st in their category and 4th overall after a major navigation error was made during the orienteering course. Their total time was just over 5hours to complete the course. Jen and Adrian look forward to racing the next and final MOMAR race of the year later on in September.

Team DART-nuun talks about Matt Hearts crash

TRIOBA 2007 12hr

Matt Hart hits the deck hard in a down hill bike section of the race. The team tells the story. Here the story in the video.

DART-nuun finishes TRIOBA 2007 in 2nd

DART-nuun came in 2nd place in this afternoons TRIOBA 12. The team looked a little ragged crossing the finish line but the real clincher was the navigation problems at CP16. DART-nuun felt they lost about 30min in that navigation error. That gave the edge to MERGEO and that is what MERGEO said they needed. MERGEO said they weren't sure if they were going to catch DART-nuun and they were just waiting for DART-nuun to make a mistake. MERGEO said, "The race was so close we knew we could possibly win if DART made even a small navigational error."

Both teams are now in good spirits after congratulating each other. Nice hot, hard and fast racing on both teams parts. So fast that right now no other teams have come in for the last hour and 20min.

Although teams DART-nuun and MERGEO came in 19min apart, the video was mixed to show both finishes in one clip.

We just downloaded the video from the cameras that were carried by DART-nuun during the race. Come back to see that footage, tomorrow morning, after the Tour de France

Mergeo across the finish line At 1:25, DART still racing.

First finishes at 1:25PM.

They look good and are happy to be done. Mergeo crosses the finish line ahead of DART-nuun to win the final TRIOBA 12hr and finish ahead of DART-nuun for the 2nd time ever.

Mergo was about a minute behind DART-nuun at CP15 and then passed DART-nuun somewhere around CP16 and did not see them again.

We await DART-nuun at the finish. I am sure the boys are pumping hard.

Teams not as far along as first thought

Jen Reports from the field, the bushes, hiding and whispering:

We previously thought teams would be in soon and were looking for CP22 the last CP.

Butt...... after running into team DART-nuun, who looked focused and a little concerned, we found out from the team that they were still looking for CP16 the said, â??We are not sure which position we are in. We think Mergeo is ahead of us because we have been lost for a while." But DART-nuun had not seen Mergeo for a while and they may be having trouble also, as the 3rd place team through transition was sighted heading from CP14 to CP15 from an unusual approach. Where is Mergeo? Who is running first?

Race Director, Justin Yeager, exclaims, â??This is an interesting turn of events....CP16 should be fairly straight forward to find."

Canadaâ??s untamed wilderness pushes teams to the limit at the Raid the North Extreme

DART-nuun takes 2nd after a close top 3 battle

Prince Rupert - British Columbia - played host to the 2007 edition of Canadaâ??s premier race and one of North Americaâ??s most prestigious expedition adventure races, Raid the North Extreme. True to its tradition, the race took teams on a journey through rugged terrain with challenging navigation. So much so that only four teams managed to complete the first trekking section before the cut-off time for teams to remain on the full course. â??Breathtaking but with challenging navigation as the risk of being â??cliffed outâ?? was all around us in the steep alpine terrain,â?? commented Cyril - team navigator â?? on the first stunning section through old growth forest and alpine peaks. The rest of the team consisted of Ryan VanGorder, Aaron Rinn, and new team member Mari Chandler.

Due to major flooding in the Prince Rupert area, the course required some drastic changes just weeks before the race was to begin. The senior management team at Frontier Adventure Racing was able to secure a new race location on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) - known as the Galapagos of the North - and get assistance from BC Ferries to provide the proper logistical support. The race and its members were embraced by their new host - the Haida Gwaii - and race headquarter was established at the newly constructed Haida Heritage Centre at Qayâ??llnagaay.

The race started with a brief prologue through the streets of Prince Rupert and onto the ferry in route to the Queen Charlotte Islands where a three to four day non-stop expedition race around the islands unfolded. The final section of the race was back in Prince Rupert and consisted of a 24-30 hour race in and around the host town.

Starting from the Haida Heritage Center, the first kayak section began to spread the field of competitors. DART-nuun came off the water in 4th place and left the transition area in 3rd as their fast switch to trekking paid off. The first trekking stage of the race required teams to travel 20 kilometers, climb over 6,000 vertical feet through rugged island terrain, and test their navigation skills.

With the race split into stages there were also very aggressive cut off times set to assure teams moved throughout the course in order to participate in as much of the race as possible. After completing the trek in roughly 13 hours, DART-nuun found themselves tied for 2nd with team Sole and they would be two of the only four teams to complete the demanding section prior to the cutoff. Some teams spent as long as 50 hours on the section.

From here, the course took racers on a 300 kilometer biking and trekking trip that circumnavigated the north island (Graham Island) and had a dramatic change of scenery from alpine mountains to grasslands and miles of uninterrupted coastline. â??What a change from the thick forest and alpine terrain. We were lucky to see such unspoiled beaches,â?? explained Mari while describing the trek along the northern spit of Queen Charlotte Islands. During this part of the race, DART-nuun and team Sole were always within minutes of each other and pushed to close the gap with the lead team â?? Yukon Wild.

Upon completing the route around the north end of the island, DART-nuun opted to sleep while Sole pressed on. After some much needed rest, the team paddled the inlet to Moresby Island and worked their way up Mt. Moresby, the tallest peak on the Queen Charlotte Islands at 1,164 meters. After ascending and descending this formidable island peak, the team had closed the gap to within 2 hours of the 2 lead teams that were now within minutes of each other.

The next section was a monstrous 45 km paddle in inflatable kayaks along one of the islandâ??s wild and beautiful channels. â??This section was one of numerous kayak sections that showed us some of the most stunning views of the Charlottes. We were even greeted by a black bear that emerged from the forest onto the beach as we glided by,â?? exclaimed Aaron. The views were a welcome distraction from the difficult nine hour paddle into a headwind. As the night fell, the team finally arrived at the transition where their bikes awaited to take them on a tricky orienteering section where - the team would soon find out - old roads were reclaimed by Mother Nature.

At this stage of the race, the team had closed the gap even more to within 1 hour of the lead team and 1â??2 hour of 2nd place. Despite the night conditions and the need for sleep, the team decided to press on knowing that after the bike orienteering section, only a 2 hour paddle separated them from the finish of the Queen Charlotte Islands stage where an over night ferry would provid all teams some much needed rest off the clock. â??We knew that the team who managed to finish the Queen Charlotte Islands stage first would be in a very good position to win the overall race. So, we decided to go for it and hope we wouldnâ??t fall asleep on our bikes,â?? explained Ryan. At first, the team moved efficiently through the first few checkpoints but as the night progressed, sleep deprivation set in and some of the navigation became difficult especially as some of the trails on the map did not materialize on the ground. â??At one point, we were pushing our bikes through the woods since the trail disappeared,â?? remembered Aaron. After hours of fighting sleep deprivation and finding their way through the bike course, the team arrived at the final kayak section in 2nd place. The night had reshuffled the top 3 with DART moving up one spot ahead of Yukon Wild.

Back in Prince Rupert after over three days of intense racing, the teams headed out from the ferry dock for the final 24-30 hours of racing that took teams on an extended journey around the local mountains and waterways. The highlight of the final stage was a 12 kilometer kayak portage that was utilized to connect two distinct water ways. This proved to be a demanding section of the race and took the team more than four hours to complete. â??We thought our strategy of rolling up the inflatable kayaks onto thick PVC piping would allow us to work our way through the bush,â?? stated Ryan. â??Unfortunately the bush was a bit too thick for anyone to move fast and we were reduced to a slugfest like most other teams.â??

Despite some hard racing from all the teams through a long, wet, and difficult final day, the final top 3 positions remained unchanged. DART-nuun crossed the finish line in second place after 102 hours of racing.

Next, DART-nuun will compete in the Oakridge â?? Oregon â?? edition of the Big Blue Adventure Racing Series on July 21st.

The team's successes would not be possible without the generous support of their sponsors that they hand picked because they work in the world's most demanding conditions.

DART-nuun places 2nd at RTNX, comments from Ryan

The team arrived home from the Raid the North Extreme (RTNX), Prince Rupert Canada, today. I had a quick chance to sit down with Ryan VanGorder before he lay down to sleep under a shade tree in his backyard, for a much needed sleep. DART-nuun had raced for 100hrs continuously, placing 2nd, and then turned around and drove 19hrs non-stop, to arrive home this morning.

Ryan told me of epic terrain, repeated vertical gains and drops from sea level, trekking through huge stands of old growth timber, and paddling for 10hrs strait against a head wind in an inflatable kayak. He described the most difficult section of an adventure race he had ever completed, and a very tight race at the front between DART-nuun and Team Sole.

Ryan was amazed at the ability of the Producers of RTNX, Frontier Adventure Racing, to pull of a completely alternate race course 3 weeks before race start. He indicated that the local Indian Nation and Canadians embraced the race hosting salmon bakes, putting up racers in their villages, and transporting racers by ferry.

Ryan and Aaron Rinn came away from the race with 325 pictures and 15 video clips. He described it as some seriously "sick" media.

I will be sitting down with Aaron and Ryan, this Thursday, to process the media and get it up on the DART-nuun website, for your viewing, as soon as possible. Look for all of this and the race report to come to you next week.

And..... I asked the inevitable, why 2nd and not 1st, he told me it was a complicated answer.

For the answer to my question and details on the race, I guess we will have to await the official race report, currently being written.

Stay Tuned!

We will be reporting from the field during the TRIOBA Race, the 14th of this month. You will need to hit that refresh button all day to keep up to date!
