RTNX - Preperation

Teams were greeted to a Native song and dance section at the Prince Rupert cultural center that was amazing. The heritage and native presence is very large and it is nice to see the local community embrace its roots.

DART-nuun has been busy trying to prepare its gear bins for a race that will be won and lost in the transitions. Being prepared and having thought through the race is on the top of the team's list right now.

Other teams in the race seem to be taking many different approaches to their preparation and race strategy. While all the teams will be fighting for the podium a couple of the teams that command attention and are expected to be contenders include: DART-nuun, Sole, Yukon, SSS, Supplier Pipeline and a couple of dark horses...watch out for Helly Hanson/Momar.

Teams take off for the Island Sunday morning and then you can track the coverage of the race through Sleepmonsters.ca. The links will be posted right here. They have a dashboard and coverage set up, hopefully there is enough internet connection and resources available to keep everyone updated with the action.

Look for more updates throughout the race through the links posted at the top of the Dart-nuun News Blog and more blog entries after the racers return to the mainland from Queen Charlotte Island on Friday...

This is the staging to get the teams back to the mainland (Prince Rupert is actually on an Island) for the last stage of the race (20-30 hours). The race starts right off of the ferry as the teams arrive in the morning after a full night sail.

-Trek

Average racing time is estimated at around 70 hours and FAST times are estimated around 54 hours...the team is gunning for the later. The race is essentially a circumnavigation of the main land form that constitutes Queen Charlotte Island. The teams are expected to be treated to an array of beautiful scenery and a plethora of wild life. Again Frontier Adventure Racing has put Real Wilderness, Real Navigation and Real Adventures on the fore front of the race.

Prince Rupert - Arrival and prep for Raid the North

Headed North for Raid the North Extreme the team, comprised of Cyril Jay-Rayon, Aaron Rinn, Ryan VanGorder and Mari Chandler arrived in Prince Rupert, B.C which will serve as the pre and post race hub for the race and are excited to get preperations started for the race. After Ferrying to Vancouver Island from Port Angles the team drove the 500 km accross the Island before hopping on the famous inside passage ferry and sailing for 15 hours through the majestic route filled with rugged coastline, waterfalls and snow capped peaks.

Because of the last minute adjustments to the race course (Weather and snow caused) a majority of the course has been moved to uncharted grounds and in the location of the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast. As well the order of events have been pre released to help teams plann accordingly and get their gear ready for action.

Word for the day is going to be "transition" as there are going to be a healthy amount of them and the teams will be on their toes (tows?) changing from sport to sport frequently.

Next up we will let you know what the order of events is looking like.

Dart-nuun wins the Pacific Northwest Championships season opener

Ellensburg, Washington (May 19th, 2007)) â?? Team Dartâ??nuun, comprised of Ryan VanGorder, Aaron Rinn, and Matt Hart, successfully defended their Pacific Northwest Championsâ?? title and won the 2007 season opener of the Trioba adventure race series. In just over three hours the team covered 10 kilometers of rugged off trail travel and 25 kilometers of mountain biking which required spot on navigation and included two sections of bush whacking with their bikes to connect routes.

The race was split between trekking and biking and began out of the LT Murray/Joe Watt Canyon area near Ellensburg in beautiful Central Washington. The trek was made up of a series of checkpoints that required teams to navigate their way through the mountainous terrain and required serious attention to their map and compass. â??The terrain allowed for a wicked course and we had fun from start to finish,â?? explained Rinn who flawlessly navigated the team into the finish line.

DART-nuun completed the first 10 checkpoints and the entire trek in 1:09 and had only a two minute lead on the competition as they set off on their bikes. Ryan VanGorder stated, â??We put our heads down and hammered knowing that the other teams were hot on our tails.â?? Climb after climb separated the field and DART-nuun pulled ahead. They made a couple of strategic decisions along the way opting to shoulder their bikes and bush whack to connect trails that were vital in achieving the most optimal route. These decisions paid off as it put the team in a position to finish well ahead of the ensuing teams.

Despite a flat tire in route to the finish line, the team was able to finish the course in 3:07:03 and come out on top of the sold out field of 35 teams. Next DART-nuun will be competing in Canadaâ??s most prestigious and world renowned expedition race at the end of June â?? Raid the North Extreme.
