Pre-race frenzy, mapping and it gets crazy
Saturday, March 26, 2007 8:27PM (Pacific Time)
From the Hotel Santa Isabella. Ensenada, Mexico, the Baja Peninsula. 74 miles south of San Diego California, on the Pacific Ocean.
Quick note: The teams received their maps! The swells look like they will be 5â??-9â??! Teams will head out of Ensenada at 8AM, paddling about 15K strait out to sea to the island of Todo Santos.
Todayâ??s moment: Viewing the slide show of the canyon section coming up towards the middle of the race, 6000ft of drop in 11km, on foot, scrambling over glassy water scoured granite boulders and slopes from pool to pool.
Report: The race presentation made a big impression on the racers. You could sense the level of concern rising as teams listened to Race Director, Paul Romero, ocean kayak section and the Canyoneering section. The mountain bike climb from the desert floor to 8000ft was of little concern to the teams as they viewed the canyon slides. Approximately 13 individual rappels in between scrambles and swims had teams looking at each other gauging their teammateâ??s reaction to what is sure to become the talk of the race at the finish line.
A close second in popularity to the canyon will be the rally car section. 70mph through the desert will be great fun. This intrepid reporter will look to get in one of the Baja cars to give you a true feel of the rally course.
All of the teams are either mapping or prepping gear at this point. 10 maps will take them across the desert.
We will be leaving Ensenada tomorrow. I hope to have access to the internet while on the road following the teams. Stand by for reports from inside the race.
Couldn't get the pictures up today, it is a mad house around here now, as we prep to travel in to country where only Pumas and Mountain Goats live.
From the field, in frenzy of last minute prep, Erik Nachtrieb.
