Be careful what you ask for...you might get it

I love hanging out at manned checkpoints late at night...particularly the ones in the middle of nowhere with a roaring fire. If the weather is bad...even better. Most racers shoot straight for the warmth and light...desperate for a physical and psychological boost in the wee hours.

I enjoy watching the other kind. The ones that pull up to the checkpoint and intentionally stay away from the fire. They know that those flames are a proverbial succubus placed in their way...intentionally...by race management just to make them suffer...either by enjoying it, only briefly, before trudging back into the cold dark or by forcing themselves to forgo a moment of comfort for fear that it will sap their will to persevere.

As usual we'll be going out of our way to setup as many manned checkpoints along the coldest and darkest stretches of the course as possible.

You'll have to decide how close you wanna get :-)

Say hello to the Mad River Adventure 16

The boats you'll be paddling in Dahlonega don't look like they just came out of the box like the one pictured...and you won't have seat backs...and they're yellow...not red...aside from that they're EXACTLY the same.

Here are a few reviews of the Mad River Adventure 16. Opinions range from "it's a nice trash can, or plastic coffin" to "AWESOME canoe" :-)

Will volunteer for shoes?

Veteran racer? Aspiring novice? Total newbie? Doesn't matter...we've got a job...and a bunch of free stuff...for you :-)

We need volunteers to help during Check In on Friday (March 6th), to join team Checkpoint Zero/Inov-8 on the course while the race is in progres (manning checkpoints and transition areas) and to pack things up when the race is over.

If you've ever worked behind the scenes at an adventure race you know how much fun it is and that it's the best way to watch the race unfold. If you haven't you're in for one exciting weekend.

All volunteers will be provided the following:
  • Lodging on Friday night
  • Dinner on Friday night
  • Breakfast on Saturday morning at the Start
  • Official race shirt
  • Checkpoint Zero branded Headsweats hat or visor (your choice)
  • Socks from Darn Tough
  • Shoes from Inov-8
For more information or to volunteer please send an email to race@checkpointzero.com. Please include your full name, phone number, availability and job preference.
