Living in a small town like Gunnison, CO you've got a plethora of hardcore athletes all training for "their day". The one athlete we all love to death but dread training with (on the male side at least) is Brian Smith. Why? Because the kid is always full throttle! His easy day is your hard day. You know what your in for when you sign up for a ski, bike, or run with this boy....your going to come back from a furious pace, slobbering all over yourself because you just tried to hang with Smithy! Our adventure race team used him as a fill in for the Buena Vista, CO Adventure Extreme Series race this summer and he was instrumental in helping us win that race!
Little did we know what was to come this past weekend.....
The XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS where held in Maui, HI this Sunday. In fantastic conditions (Sea level, mid 80 degrees weather) 550 competitors took the start line on Makena Beach. It was Brian's day as he exited the water in 113th and proceeded to pass 110 people to finish an AMAZING and career best 3rd place! En route he posted the fastest bike split of the day by 2 1/2 minutes, and 3rd fastest run split. Pretty FANTASTIC stuff. We knew he could do it!
Needless to say....he's got an honorary spot on our team! Congratulations and thanks for letting us train with ya!
